In his address yesterday Minister of Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Honorable Nqobizitha Mangaliso Ndlovu shared that the airline will connect Zimbabwe to 130 destinations across the world, for the Zimbabwe Tourism sector this is a plus that translates to 130 source markets harbouring potential tourism business. The Minister applauded His Excellency President E. D. Mnangagwa on the engagement & re-engagement drive which continues to break new grounds such as the Qatar Airways launch.

Qatar Airways is the world’s fastest-growing airline boasting of numerous elite awards, to see the airline launching in Zimbabwe raises our destination profile. Furthermore, having the airline plying the Zimbabwe air spaces cognizant of the fact that Qatar Airways is the first global airline to achieve the prestigious 5 Star Covid19 airline safety rating by International Air Transport Rating Organisation Skytrax is a major vote of confidence on destination Zimbabwe. At the launch yesterday, welcoming the airline in true Zimbabwean hospitality highlighted renewed hope as the travel & tourism sector has over the past year and half taken a hit with the #COVID19 pandemic.

This development has boosted the National Tourism Recovery & Growth Strategy & bolstered a positive image for destination Zimbabwe. Accessibility has years been a major limitation to #ZimTourismGrowth, and now the presence of Qatar Airways alludes to improved connectivity between Zimbabwe and its prinary as well as new source markets. We definitely can now look forward to increased arrivals from the Middle East region. The Minister also took the opportunity to share his efforts on the tourism front together with the tourism sector and stakeholders to step up efforts to engage Qatar & the Middle East region, to find ways of promoting tourism in both countries. In face of the Covid19 recovery path there is great scope of improved travel to Africa & to Zimbabwe in particular.

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Mr Akbar Al Baker’s remarks were premised on the airline’s commitment to steadily grow routes in Africa, the fastest growing economic region in the world, to support the recovery of tourism & trade in the region, where  Zimbabwe is indeed open for business. In relation to the recovery of the Southern Africa region, the #ZimTourismRecovery efforts have witnessed Victoria Falls achieve herd immunity in April 2021, now vaccinated Covid19-free visitors can #VisitVictoriaFalls & rest assured they’ll be in one of the safest cities in the world! Zimbabwe is indeed open for tourism.

With Qatar Airways there are opportunities for strategic partnerships in joint marketing, tourism development, language & service excellence programs. The airline has an unrivalled level of service, tapping into its culture of excellence is undoubtedly a plus for Zimbabwe. Qatar Airways presents business opportunities for Zimbabwean traders too, the airline’s cargo offering of more than 30 tonnes capacity per week allows for exports of vegetables and flowers to destinations on its network – U.K., USA, Germany etc. Our Zimbabwe climate is definitely a favourite for this. The coming of the airline is also an employment boost noted by the quintessential hospitality from Qatar Airways’ cosmopolitan cabin crew including Zambian & Zimbabwean nationals. Of course Zimbabwe was teaming with more pride as our very own Captain Maxwell Chikava flew the Qatar Airways home! All in all the launch of Qatar Airways in Zimbabwe is highly commended and as reiterated by Honorable Minister Ndlovu immense appreciation goes to Honorable Felix Mhona the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, his Ministsry and stakeholders. Through their committed efforts Zimbabwe’s destination competitiveness & connectivity are greatly increased.
